So you are looking for a new start in life. You want to do something completely different and run a business from home. You have come across an opportunity in the field of multi-level marketing (also known as network marketing or relationship marketing). You understand that this system is based on a pyramid structure and the majority of people who go into it are never going to get off the bottom rungs of the ladder; but then there is also the marketing material that shows that at least some people do wonderfully well and achieve the sort of results that you dream of. The question is: if you give it a try are you going to be one of the smiling faces in the promotional literature or are you going to waste a lot of time and a bit of money and then try to find something else to do?
There are no definite answers, but here are some factors that you should take into account:
1. Is the product right? Is it something that a high proportion of people buy and that they buy regularly or, at least, frequently? Are you confident that the quality of the product is good and do you like it? Can you get genuinely enthusiastic about it? If the answer to any of these is "No" of "Maybe" then look for something else.
2. Do you have a wide circle of contacts with people with whom it is practical and acceptable for you to do business? You need to think carefully about this. You may be well connected in the school community or the church, but how would these connections feel about your trying to sell them something or trying to persuade them to sell something? If you are well connected in a big community of some sort, in which you would feel comfortable about doing business, this is a major benefit, provided that the community can afford the product and that the product has not been oversold in that community already.
3. Do you find it easy to get people to do what you want them to? This is a factor of social status and personality. If you are the quiet shy guy who sits in the corner and observes what is going on, or the popular one whom everyone likes to joke with but no one takes seriously, then you are unlikely ever to see your face smiling out of the promotional literature.
4. Do you feel concerned about putting pressure on other people or worried that they may not be doing as well out of a deal as you are doing. To succeed in the multi-level marketing game you have to be prepared both to accept and to apply all sorts of social pressure to achieve success.
5. Are you really hungry for success? Are you prepared to devote a lot of time and energy, and to carry out the plans and programs that others suggest? Most of all, do you have belief in your capacity to succeed?
By working through these issues you will get a better idea about whether the opportunity you are considering in multi-level marketing is likely to work for you. If you are doubtful, look for something else, because there is no point in going in hesitantly or half heartedly. That is a certain path to failure. If the opportunity seems to fit with you, you may want to give it a try.
If you are going to, then give it everything you've got, but remember that if it doesn't work out for you that makes you one of the great majority and it does not mean that there are not other excellent opportunities to be explored that might be better for you.
